Judo Canada - Rough outing for Lévesque and Roberge

Montréal, December 18, 2011 – It was a tough day for judokas Marylise Lévesque and Catherine Roberge, Sunday, at the Qingdao Grand Prix, in China. After both profited from a bye into the second round in the under 78 kg division, the two Quebecers were taken down in their respective first bouts.

Marylise Lévesque was beaten by the 14th ranked German, Luize Malzahn.

“It’s an opponent that I’ve already beaten, so it’s obvious that I’m disappointed by the result. The fight started off really badly. I hurt myself early on and then subsequently wasn’t able to block her first attack. She scored an ippon rather quickly,” Lévesque explained.

Catherine Roberge was also disappointed by her performance against the Frenchwoman Lucie Louette, 9th ranked judoka in the world. “She surprised me with an attack at the two minute mark. Overall she had a very good day, and she’s certainly improved since our last confrontation, though I’ve already beaten her three times. I should have done more to win the fight,” Catherine Roberge said in regards to her opponent, who finished the competition with a bronze medal.

The two Canadian judokas will participate in the national training camp in Montréal at the beginning of January, before setting off for Europe. “ Were looking to take advantage of the camp to refine a few things in order to be ready for the winter schedule”, Catherine Roberge concluded.
