Judo Canada - Disappointing day in Prague

Montréal, February 25, 2012 – It was a tough day all around for the Canadian judokas, Saturday, at the men’s World Cup competition, presented in Prague, Czech Republic. Neither Sergio Pessoa, Michal Popiel, nor Alister Ward was able to come away from the event with a classification.

“It was not one of our better performances. It turned out to be a rather short and disappointing outing for the team,” national coach Sergio Pessoa Sr. noted.

After obtaining a bye through the first round in the under 60 kg class, Sergio Pessoa beat Algerian Kamel Haroune by ippon in his first bout. The Montrealer’s next fight versus the Russian Ervand Mgdsyan did not go nearly as well, unfortunately, as he would fall in just the first minute by way of an ippon.

“Sergio’s coming back from a long-term injury and is still not 100%. Despite today’s result, it was a positive return to action, simply because his knee held up nicely. This alone will give him more confidence in his run for an Olympic qualification,” coach Pessoa Sr. explained.

Fighting in the under 66 kg category, Michal Popiel was also eliminated in his second bout. After having bested the Kyrgyz Edil Bekkulov by ippon, the Quebecer suffered defeat at the hands of Sandro Iakobashvili. The Georgian won the duel thanks to a yuko.

In the same class, Alister Ward lost his first round bout versus the Brit Lewis Keeble, who was able to score two yukos in the victory.

On Sunday, Kalem Kachur will be competing in the under 81 kg division. On the women’s side, Kelita Zupancic (- 70 kg), Marylise Lévesque (- 78 kg) and Catherine Roberge (- 78 kg) will be in Poland, taking part in the Warsaw World Cup.
